The first 10 days after a hair transplant: day-by-day aftercare
The first ten days are when grafts anchor in their new place. From washing to sleeping position, here is what to pay attention to, step by step.

Days 1–3: protecting the grafts
In the first three days the grafts are not yet fully anchored. The most important rules: do not touch or scratch the recipient area, and wear a hat only as your physician advises.
Mild swelling around the forehead and eyes is possible and usually eases after the third day. Apply cold compresses only to the forehead, never to the recipient area.
- Sleep on your back with your head slightly raised.
- Avoid alcohol and smoking.
- Have your first wash done at the clinic.
Days 4–7: regular washing
Daily washing begins with the lotion and shampoo your physician provides. Do not rub the recipient area: dab the foam on gently with your fingertips and rinse with lukewarm, low-pressure water.
Small scabs are clearly visible during this period. Picking them can cost grafts; let them soften and loosen through washing.
Days 8–10: scabs fall away
Scabs usually fall away during these days and redness fades noticeably. Some hairs may come out with the scabs — this does not mean the graft is lost; the follicle stays in place.
After day ten, your washing routine becomes simpler under your physician's guidance. Strenuous exercise, pools, the sea and direct sun usually wait about a month.
When should you contact your physician?
If redness increases, or you notice discharge, fever or severe pain that does not ease, message your patient coordinator right away with a photo. Early contact keeps small issues from becoming big ones.
